original watson house bank 1960s
$119.00
The c. 1796 Oliver Watson House was the farmhouse on the 140 acre parcel that became the University of Rhode Island in 1888. In the early 1960s URI was planning to demolish it, so Oliver Watson Greene purchased it for $500 with the intention of dismantling it and rebuilding it on his Peter Pots property. The URI community changed its mind and decided to keep it and restore it. The Watson House Bank was made with proceeds going to the restoration. This is a pristine and bright early example from the 1960s with matte gray glaze and blue shingles. Not many survived because these had to be broken to get the coins out. About 3 1/2” long, 3 1/2'“ height.
