very early gladding's grapes pitcher 1960s
These pitchers were made as a promotional item in the early 1960s for Gladding’s, a famous woman's clothing store in downtown Providence. Their bunch of grapes logo is the oldest in the United States, dating to 1766. (Gladding's, Shepard's, Cherry & Webb, Peerless, and the Outlet Co. were the major downtown stores; all gone now. Gladding’s went out of business in 1973.) This is one of the earlier examples of the Gladding’s pitcher we have found. The grapes, leaves, and tendril are all in very crisp detail, in fact, we never noticed the tendril before. As the mold was used repeatedly, these details faded over time. The Mahogany Brown glaze has a warm coloration as it flows into the cream underglaze. The signature is not that of Mrs. Carsten of the 1960s and the piece may predate her tenure. 3 1/2” height.
