Our beloved Piggy Bank was one of several bank designs that started in the 1960s. This was the original piggy bank design and a larger version came later. Most banks at the time were finished in this matte gray glaze with unique brushed-on decoration in blue or brown. These banks did not have a removable plug, so they had to be broken to get the coins out. Thankfully, this one was spared that fate and survived in perfect condition. Today’s trivia is that in 15th-century England earthenware clay was called “pygg”, and coins were often kept in earthenware pots. In the 19th century, potters began to make banks in the shape of pigs to make a literal pygg bank. This little piggy is about 4 3/4” long and quite thick and heavy.
